"I see everything from the hallway. I tell no one."
The short version
Gary has no accounts, no ads and no servers that store your data. Your steps, health data, calendar and location are read on your phone and stay there. Two small things leave your phone: a weather lookup and anonymous usage counts. You can switch the counts off.
What Gary reads, and why
- Steps, distance and flights climbed (Apple Health and your phone's motion sensor): to count your day and keep the streak.
- Workouts and sleep (Apple Health, if you allow it): so Gary goes easier on you after a short night or a hard workout. Never to scold you.
- Your calendar (if you allow it): so he knows when you're busy. He doesn't show event titles unless you turn that on in Settings.
- Rough location (if you allow it): for the weather, and your city's name when you're far from home.
- Your name and step goal: what you type in when you set him up.
All of this is stored on your phone, and shared only with Gary's own widgets and his Apple Watch app. Delete the app and it's gone. (Your Apple Health data stays in Apple Health, which is where it belongs.)
What leaves your phone
- The weather. Gary asks Open-Meteo for the forecast, sending only your coordinates rounded to two decimals (about a kilometre) and no identifier.
- Your city's name. When you're more than about 30 km from home, your phone asks Apple's location service for the name of the place.
- Anonymous usage counts. Gary sends counts like "the app was opened" or "the goal was hit" to TelemetryDeck, hosted in the EU, so we can see which parts people use. They come with a scrambled ID that can't be traced back to you, plus your app version, iOS version and device model. Never your steps, health data, calendar, location or name. Switch it off in Settings.
- Purchases. The Hallway Club and tips go through Apple. We never see your name or payment details.
Gary's improvised lines are written by Apple Intelligence on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere for that.
What we don't do
We don't sell data, show ads, track you across other apps or websites, or build a profile of you. There's nothing to sell. Gary doesn't even know your surname.
Writing to us
If you email letterbox@garyfromthehallway.com, we use your email only to reply, and delete it when the conversation is over.
Your rights
Because your personal data stays on your phone, you're already in control of it: you can see it in the app and delete it by deleting the app. The usage counts can't be tied to you, so there's nothing in them we could find or hand over. Questions about any of this: letterbox@garyfromthehallway.com.
Who we are
Gary is made by Jakob Granqvist in Sweden. If this policy changes, the new version goes here with a new date.
